However, the camera and this specific project gave us the unforeseen possibility of sitting and conversing together for more than 90 minutes. We discussed the installation in the Humboldt Lab, his current project around the improvement of planning surgical intervention on speech functions. He was also kind enough to unfold his medical illustration working process for us, working through the layers on his giant drawing tablet… more on this very soon! “What I like about Maxime’s project is that it is somewhere midway between an art and science format”, he said to Theo. Of course, he appreciates the interest that I manifest for his work. Like him, I see this collaboration as the exchange of time and ultimately as the “exchange of gifts”, as the ethnographer and film maker John L. Jackson puts it (2004). Also, we train them to maybe continue onto the academic path.” The exercise of making quick design “sprints”, a term borrowed from computer programming, brings the students to explore ideas in their materiality more dynamically: here, a “slithering of the snake” is transduced into paper and muscle wires in many different iterations. How can we translate them into these semirigid materials? The week before, he started from the fascinating folding of a single paper leaf with the muscle wire. Today, he first shows us the motion of a wave through a cut-out paper shape. Using motion sensor, he tries to convey the impression that the gesture of his hand has triggered a wave reaction in the paper material. “The final product, which is the key feature and the main goal of most other seminars, generally outshines the whole research process. Usually, in the second week, students are working on the mood boards, doing some field research. With us, they are already in the second rounds of presentation.” The student expressed some humor, gluing a smiley on his hand to simulate the swimmer’s movement with his fingers. “It’s always nice to have to trigger a smile in a presentation”, says Judith. She also advises to speed up the videos, to magnify the phenomenons, and get them to gain some spectacular features. “Trick it!” – however, the subtlest motions are much appreciated, an insider joy exclusive to the specific aesthetics of design researchers and other technical poets (Simondon would probably love it). Reading an earlier version of this post, Judith thus commented on this point: “Just to make sure: This is about early prototypes where they maybe did not manage to fully implement what they were looking for yet want to communicate a certain quality, aim or finding. Seminar at HU Berlin, March- July 2023 Contemporary multimodal ethnographic approaches are deeply rooted in fieldwork interactions with other knowing and making communities. Describing and theorizing making practices contributes to triggering new interests in material cultures. It also branches out to further studies on embodiment and on the techniques of the self. Telling better stories of making means sharpening our techniques for storytelling, experimenting with new media, and probing other ways of entering into collaboration with epistemic partners. During the summer semester of 2023, we engaged in four collective field works around technical activities: pottery, boomerang making, 3D sketching, and Iyengar yoga. We experimented with various ways to share the ethnographic experiences of “making” practices into text, drawings, workshops, and virtual installations. Digital drawing and painting in 360° pictures revealed to hold the unanticipated potential to support our endeavor. The creation of a virtual tour provided us with new means of exploration of this space and of its otherworldly inhabitants, remotely inspired by the children's book “Night at the Museum" by the illustrator Milan Trenc (1993). With this contribution, we intend to reflect critically on the dramaturgical multimedia skillsets and mindsets which were brought forth during this experimental fieldwork. I argue that these images work in a manner analog to that of the psychedelic drawings by Michael Taussig: “in pointing away from the real, they capture something invisible and auratic that makes the thing depicted worth depicting.” (2011, 13) Taking imaginative abilities more seriously could empower anthropologists, enabling them to take part in new kinds of speculative investigations on ontologically varied forms of alterities. Inherently a filtering activity, fermentation relies on the long-standing relationship of yeast and bacteria to nutrients and the elements. Through practices of food transformation, preservation, and consumption, the newly woven symbiotic entities emerge from fermentation processes and enter into a different ecosystem – that of the human body, itself a multi-organism entity. These entities are directly in correspondence with our microbiome: fermented food has, in a way, already stepped into the human digestive system before it is ingested. Drawing on anthropological and historical perspectives, we also aim to examine pockets of resistance against industrialization - communities still practicing ferment activity - while framing them in a broader picture of modern foodways, understanding this phenomenon as a »Gleichzeitigkeit des Ungleichzeitigen«.
